The Sturgeon Rural Crime Watch Association is proud to be a sponsor of the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. The D.A.R.E. program was developed in 1983 as a cooperative effort between the Los Angeles (California) Unified School District and Los Angeles Police Department.

The Morinville R.C.M.P. is proud to offer the D.A.R.E. program to Sturgeon County’s youth. Last school year (2009-2010) six D.A.R.E. trained officers from the Morinville RCMP Detachment delivered the D.A.R.E. curriculum to 417 grade five and six students in 9 schools;

  • Notre-Dame School (Notre-Dame)

  • Camilla School (Riviere Qui Barre)

  • Legal School

  • Gibbons School

  • Namao School

  • Vanier School (Morinville)

  • Kipohtakaw Eduction Center (Alexander first nation)

  • Lilian Schick School (Bon Accord)

  • Guthrie School (Edmonton Garrison)

D.A.R.E. is an internationally recognized program which seeks to provide children and youth with the information and skills needed to live drug and violence free lives. D.A.R.E. works to establish positive relationships between local R.C.M.P. Officers, students, teachers, parents and community members. D.A.R.E. is more than a simple "Just Say No" program. D.A.R.E. teaches students a decision making model which will help them to make healthy and informed choices throughout their lives. By investing time and energy in today’s youth through the D.A.R.E. program we are committed to reducing drugs and violence and preventing crime for the future.

The elementary school D.A.R.E. program which is currently being offered in Sturgeon County is taught by specially trained RCMP officers who currently deliver the nine-week program to grade five and six students. Each D.A.R.E. class culminates with a special graduation ceremony in which the students pledge their commitment to staying drug and violence free.

D.A.R.E. lesson topics include:

  • The D.A.R.E. Decision Making Model

  • Tobacco

  • The Media’s Influence

  • Alcohol

  • Inhalants

  • Peer Pressure

  • Positive Alternatives to Drugs

  • 9 Ways to Stay in Charge

Who supports D.A.R.E in Sturgeon county?

The Sturgeon Rural Crime Watch Association is proud to be one of the local sponsors of the D.A.R.E program. Without their financial support, the D.A.R.E program would not be possible in Sturgeon County.

For more information about the DARE program, contact the Morinville RCMP D.A.R.E. coordinator, Cst. Yelena Avoine at 780-939-4520 or visit www.dare.com.

Sturgeon Rural Crime Watch (SRCW) held their 2011 Fall Annual Meeting on November 8th at the Morinville Provincial Building. Cst. Yelena Avoine was the featured guest speaker. Cst. Avoine gave a detailed power point presentation on the DARE Program.

The DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance, Education) Program is more then just drug prevention education; it teaches students good decision making skills to help them avoid the high risk behaviour to ensure they grow up healthy, safe and secure. Currently Cst. Avoine and her RCMP team present this program in each of our 9 Sturgeon County Schools.

The Sturgeon Rural Crime Watch Association is one of the major sponsors of the DARE Program. Donations are welcome from our corporate community to ensure this valued program stays healthy and sustainable for our future students.
