SRCWA #201599 - Christmas Shopping Safety

RCMP - Christmas Shopping Safety

Christmas Shopping Safety

It’s that time of year again where we all rush off to the local malls with our shopping list in tow to find the perfect Christmas gifts for our loved ones. The holiday season is a time for fun & festivity so don’t let criminals be your scrooge this holiday season. Here are a few precautions that people can take when they venture out to do their shopping to avoid heartaches & disappointments.
Christmas gift
As much as shoppers see the holiday season as an opportunity to find some great deals, pickpockets & thieves also see this as an opportune time.

In order to put a damper on criminal activity, follow these simple rules:

  • Don’t withdraw more money than you need when visiting ATM’s. Thieves lurk in parking lots around financial intitutions. Be aware of your surroundings & take note of anyone following you.
  • Men should carry their wallets in their front pockets as opposed to their back pockets or jackets.
  • Women should carry their purses close to their body but should not wrap their purse straps around themselves. Doing so could cause you to be dragged down to the ground in the event that your purse is snatched.
  • Avoid using revolving doors as thieves with good timing can grab your parcels & get away by the time it takes you to emerge.
  • Never leave your purchases unattended, even for a short period of time.

Parents

Everyone knows that shopping malls become increasingly busy at this time of year. Malls are a flurry of activity with shoppers rushing around, scurrying to find that last perfect gift to place under the tree. Often people become so focused on the task at hand that they can lose track of what they’re children are doing or where they’ve wandered off to.

Parents are reminded to keep an eye on their little ones & to never use a video arcade or a toy store as a baby sitter. Sadly, children are abducted every year, often in malls or department stores. A good idea is to have a plan & ensure that your children understand it in the event that your children become separated from you. Suggest that they go to the nearest cashier to tell them they are lost & to stay there for assistance.
Leaving your children unattended in shopping carts can lead to injuries from children falling or leaping out of the carts. Strapping your child into the cart is a good idea, but please be aware that this may still be hazardous to your children as they may struggle to get out & tip the cart over in the process. Parents should stay with their children & their shopping carts at all times.

Parking

Parking is almost always a problem when it comes to the holiday season. If possible, park under lighting & close to entrances & exits. Under no circumstances should you leave your children unattended in your vehicle, even for a short period of time. Place all of your purchases in your trunk to avoid drawing attention to your vehicle. Know that if you place your purchases in the back seat you may return to your vehicle to find your windows smashed & all of your gifts stolen. If you use a GPS to assist you in getting from one place to another, a good idea is to remove it from plain view as well.

When your day of shopping is over & it's time to head home, a good practice is to have your keys ready when you approach your vehicle. By doing so you avoid the clumsiness of trying to find your keys & juggling with your shopping bags which delays getting into your vehicle. If you feel uncomfortable about walking to your vehicle alone in the dark, consider asking a security guard to escort you.

SRCWA #201597 Break & Enter Theft

Subject: Break & Enter Theft

Over the last month Cst. ROUSE has noticed that there have been two different incidents of break and enter and thefts on rural properties.

The first incident occurred west of Morinville on a rural property where a suspect broke into a shed and stole an ATV and then proceeded to steal fuel. Approximately 500 L was stolen

The second incident occurred East of Morinville between Nov. 20-Nov 23 and in that matter someone broke into a Winnibego and stole a number of items.

Cst. ROUSE would like to appeal to the community for leads. Please report to the RCMP suspicious vehicles and activity and if possible (and safe) please obtain a Licence plate for us to follow up with.

Also please be mindful that RCMP have experienced a spike in break and enter into group mail boxes in the rural area.

On a final note, the harvest is over and the grain is in the bins. Please secure your equipment and grain and lets try to prevent grain theft.  Everyone has worked too hard this year to have it taken away.

Please contact myself or our office if you wish to report leads.

 Thanks

SRCWA Message #201592 Break & Enter

Subject: Break & Enter
Please be advised that the RCMP in Morinville have been dealing with several Break and Enters, along with vehicles being rummaged through. It is advised that no leads have been provided to RCMP at this time. Please be on the look out for anything suspicious in your neighbourhood, vehicles or persons who don't seem to be up to any good. If you note a vehicle driving on country roads in a slow manner past farms or subdivisions, it is a good sign someone is scoping a place. In the Fairhaven area South and West of St. Albert has had several off road vehicles stolen recently, if anyone happens to see a vehicle driving around with dirtbikes or quads and not strapped down in the back of a pickup, chances are it could be stolen.
To assist the Police it would be important to obtain a License Plate and or type and style of the vehicle, also attempting to see how many subjects are inside the vehicle.
Any information that may not be important to public could possibly assist Police as we may be working on leads with certain vehicles or trends.

SRCWA Message #201591

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                         November 20, 2015

Dangers relating to children and strangers

Morinville, Alberta - On November 19th, 2015, Morinville RCMP received a complaint from Notre Dame school that two teenagers had attempted to lure a child away from the school.  Upon further investigation by the Morinville RCMP detachment, three other children came forward to report similar incidents this same date; all related to the same teenage youth.  The youth responsible for these actions have been identified by police but their names will not be released as per the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

"Anytime we have incidents such as these, especially with children, we take the matters very seriously.  We are thankful the young children were cognizant enough to present these teenagers with obstacles and prevent them from achieving what ever outcome they were looking for.", said Cpl. Daryl Charron of the Morinville RCMP.  "We encourage parents and guardians to talk with their children about the dangers associated with talking to strangers and ensure they are made aware of the reality of these unfortunate incidents.  The best thing we can do for our children is prepare them and present them with tools they can use in the case they are faced with a similar situations."

Morinville RCMP are continuing with their investigation but no charges are likely at this time.

SRCWA Message #201587

Subject: Francoise's Feature

November 12, 2015
Greetings everyone,
The weather is getting cooler and with that we hope it will forestall some of the thefts. Fairhaven and Silver Chief Estates have been quite heavily targeted – first it was our aluminum and plastic signs from private property and now it has been thefts of property. Robert re-installed another aluminum sign with lag bolts but the thieves come well supplied with tools and that one was stolen as well. Robert is engraving the license number from our utility trailer on the backs of the signs. The decision was made to not install or reinstall anymore signs until spring and anti-theft screws will then be used.
We have noticed that the paint has come off some of our plastic signs. We will replace them for you and when we return them to the Provincial Board we will be reimbursed.
On October 24, 2015 Ken, Herman, Viv, Norm and Francoise attended the Zone 5 meeting in Smoky Lake. A report is provided on this link
Susan Evans, Councilor for Division 2 in Sturgeon County, attended our November meeting. She was able to clarify issues of concern i.e. traffic etc. within Sturgeon County. You will notice we are now listed on the County’s Community Calendar.
Some of our members have noticed that for some time they have not received e-mails from SRCWA. Dan, our Communications Director, has been having difficulty with sending out the e-mails and at times, the majority of the e-mails have come back to him. He is currently working on resolving the problem and he has made progress. Dan will be sending out an e-mail explaining what has taken place and what the next step will be. There is no information available to SRCW to post until it is released from the RCMP.
On Tuesday December 8th we will have our Potluck Christmas Dinner. It will be held at the Provincial Building in Morinville at 6:30. SRCW will supply the turkey and ham and we ask that anyone attending bring a favorite dish. Members and guests are welcome. We will enjoy a traditional Christmas Dinner and have the opportunity to relax and visit. Our regular meetings are strictly business and don’t allow for visiting and enjoying each other’s company. We look forward to our Christmas Dinner and hope whoever can is able to join us.
See you on the 8th
